Mississippi – AMB Blog Tour -- Giveaway

I am honored to be a part of the AMB blog tour representing Mississippi.

AMB_blog-tour

One of my first thoughts about joining the blog tour for AMB was to find pictures of actual Mississippi license plates. I liked how this plate represented Mississippi’s forestry with the pine trees, the coast with the water at the bottom of the plate, and the magnolia, the state flower.

So I proceeded to make a trial block and ended up with this, “Go Mississippi.” You can see my process HERE.
IMG_2704

Then I simplified the block and made “Go Mississippi II” using the AMB fabrics.

I wanted to try a third block, something completely different. Different colors and different style. So I used this license plate for inspiration.

I still liked the idea of using the pines, magnolia, and coast line but I liked the periwinkle background to this plate. So …. here is
“Go Mississippi III”
Go Mississippi III email 2

And did you know that AMB solids are made here in the USA? Maybe some of that cotton that we grew on our farm, that was ginned locally (Scroll down on that link to see the gin.) went into my own quilt block!

Mississippi has some interesting sites to see and things to do.
Explore the Natchez Trace – A Unique Journey from Natchez to Nashville.
The Tupelo Automobile Museum has the largest selection of classic cars east of the Mississippi River.

The Dentzel Carousel in Meridian brings back memories of days gone by.
Spring Pilgrimages in Natchez, Aberdeen, Holly Springs,  and of course Columbus where I get to volunteer with hand quilting.

This giveaway is now closed.

Clothworks is giving away a fat quarter bundle of 8 of their AMB solids to one lucky winner. And I’m giving away 7”X7” squares of my left over AMB fabric to another winner. To enter the giveaway leave a comment on this post letting us know why you would like to visit Mississippi. And if that reason is to come visit me, then “come on!”

This giveaway will be open until June 8 at 9:00 p.m. CDT to US addresses only. Then we’ll choose two winners with Mr. Random Generator.

I would love to someday tour the deep south including Mississippi. Other than spending an hour or two in Miami Intnl Airport the farthest south I've been is the Smokey Mtns in North Carolina. The license plate block quilt and tour is such a great intro for AMB cottons, they are really beautiful. I recently bought a yard of the light yellow to try it for wholecloth hand quilting and love the way it needles.

I love how you came up with your design, how you thought through the process and what gave you inspiration for your color choices. What a wonderful license plate to compliment Mississippi! Great job! Also an amazing tour. I am going to keep blogging you! Thank you!

The Natchez Trace is beautiful at all times of the year, even laden in snow. The car museum in Tupelo will astound you, even if you are not a car buff you can dream about living in the era of each of these lovely cars. Some of the best State Parks In the nation are in MS, and the Civil War sites and Vicksburg Natl. Military Park are certainly points of interest.
It is sad that residents of a state often don't visit the attractions available.

Julia, each of your Mississippi blocks are terrific, but I do really like the last one.

Barbara, Iuka

Good morning, Julia
I have been a faithful reader of your blog for about a year and I just love your art quilts. The 3rd license plate that you made is my favorite. Your wonderful "S"s in Mississippi make the entire project stand out.
I just made my first trip through Mississippi in March, when I came from northern Wisconsin to visit my son in Birmingham. I usually drive another route, but I was so happy to be able to see some of the beauty of your state.
I love your monthly quilt guild meetings and your comfort quilt get togethers. It reminds me that no matter where we live, there are people doing good for others. Blessings on your day!

I liked the first block you made. I drove through Mississippi on my way to Florida a few years ago.

I would like to come to Mississippi to see where my dog, a Blackmouth Cur came from. She, sadly, had to be put down earlier this month. Had her for almost 14 years and she came to us from Lumberton Mississippi!!

Love your license plate for Mississippi. All three versions were cute.

All three are great, but your #3 is beautiful! I have lived in MS for a short time, and you're right, it's a great state.

My college roommate and more recent friends are from Mississippi, so I would like to see their worlds.
I would probably look you up as well since I am a people person. I also would keep making several possibilities for the plate!

What great blocks! I can see why you needed different versions. I haven't yet visited Mississippi, but would like to one of these days. Maybe I'll take a boat ride down the river and visit all the states along the way. =)

I've never been east of Colorado. Vicksburg would be cool and so would the car museum. I would be really excited just to travel more states.
Would you cook some southern food for us if we visited? I've heard it's amazing.

Great blocks and great inspiration. I just like to travel, and would love to visit some plantations, and see cotton growing. Thanks.

I love all 3 of your blocks. I would love to visit Mississippi, only had a couple of train rides "Through" Mississippi. I think not in the summer time though, from what I hear it gets way too hot and humid for my tastes. Winter might be the perfect time to visit.

I'm embarrassed to say that the furthest south I've been is Kansas, so Mississippi would be a good place to start since I lived on the Mississippi River for 17 years.

I have been to Mississippi a long time ago, and remember it to be a beautiful place to visit in the summer time. You did a great job with your blocks too…so colorful!

I have been to your wonderful state many years ago. When I was a kid we drove our motorhome from MN to the gulf coast on Christmas vacation. We tied a small pine tree to the bumper and when we got there put it on a picnic table and decorated it! All the locals thought it was hilarious!!

I would enjoy the classic car museum.
