Carol

I made this small fiber art piece of my friend Carol for her birthday.

Her daughter Loretta sent me this picture of Carol taken when she was 18 years old.

I scanned it into the computer and added a filter, and then printed it onto fabric.

Carol was pleasantly surprised with her small gift.

My sister June from Virginia has been visiting for a week now. She and I visited a local watercolor artist Francis Hairston and enjoyed her paintings.

Starlit Sunflower

If you thought about Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night" when you saw this piece, then you thought right!

For inspiration, I used "Starry Night" and ...

... "Six Sunflowers" to create my piece ...

... for the Cherrywood Van Gogh challenge.

Detail of the moon ...

... and background of the sunflower.

I used Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics with my unique "Patches" technique to create the "Starry Night" background and the dahlia sunflower and it measures 20"X20".

This art quilt inspired by Van Gogh's paintings depicts the story of Job in the Bible. In Job 12:22, Job defends God to his friends and observes, "He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings utter darkness into the light." Even in his darkest hours of pain, loss, and suffering, Job trusted God to provide comfort and light.

MQA - Patches Workshop

Recently I taught my "Patches" class in Jackson for Mississippi Quilt Association. These nine students were a fun group and did wonderful work.

I'm always thrilled with the talent and creativity of the group.

Angel Fish

I started this piece to answer the challenge of making something with the theme of 'animals' and the color 'black & white.'

I found some watery looking fabric and cut 'clam shells' from the dark to fuse to a lighter fabric.

Before I was even half done with this part; I decided to swap the two fabrics around and cut light clam shells to fuse to the dark fabric.

There! I got them all fused in place and quilted wavy water over them to make a background scene for ...

... some black & white angel fish.

At this point I felt the piece needed something else to make it come to life. So I asked for ideas on FaceBook and SAQArtique. And the ideas came!

To make it less busy I toned down the dark in the background with oil pastels...

... and added more sea weed and coral ...

... only to make it busier yet!

Finally I was convinced to only use the orange coral and let the piece be more open at the top. And ta-da, it worked!

Refuge

"Refuge"
27"X21"
$650
Materials: commercial cottons, Superior Thread, and other thread. Mounted on black mat board, ready for framing, optional.

Technique: fused raw edge patches and then heavily quilted

Statement: One of the objectives of the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge is to provide habitat for migratory waterfowl and other birds. These egrets stand as if queen of the surrounding lowlands.

When Mr. Tom Cowsert came to the Noxubee County Refuge last fall as a resident artist he ask me to depict one of his paintings as a wall quilt.

He painted a turtle, frog, catfish, and alligator under the water.

I chose warmer colors for my fiber art and took the liberty to add color to the lilies. I also hid a turtle, frog, catfish, an alligator in my scene.

Sunflowers in Quadrants

The challenge for our Southern Fiber Artists was to make a sunflower in four quadrants; and then we will exchange 3 quadrants with other artists.

I was a little late getting mine finished but here it is now. We will do the exchange at our next meeting in February.

Here are some of the sunflowers that were brought to our last meeting.

And then we mixed some of them up just for fun!

I started my piece by preparing the background and quilting it.

I printed off a pattern on paper and glued it to a piece of fabric. Then I cut out the sections of the pattern and glued the sections onto another piece of fabric leaving a space between each piece.

It was tedious work and easy to get mixed up; but finally it was done.

I cut the circle out ...

... and laid it on my prepared background.

Then I proceeded to sew it carefully down to the background removing the paper as I sewed.

The center all sewed down.

Then came the scary part of cutting it into quadrants.

I then added the golden yellow petals and finished it by twisting fabric into a thin rope and zigzagging it in place.

I'm afraid now that my center is way bigger than it should be. I guess I could cut off the two center edges but ...
