This quilt has turned into another disaster for me. It is so dull and drab. I’m looking for ways to give it some zing. Maybe with the quilting thread since it is already pieced.
Here I have already quilted straight lines about 1/8” apart on the dark blue and red strips. But, it hasn’t done a thing for the quilt.“
I’m longing for it to have the pizzaz of something bright and bold. Any ideas out there on what to do?
I’m wondering if all the other contestants in the challenge “The Blue & the Grey: Quilting America’s Great Divide” are struggling with the same thing.

I like the quilt but if you want a suggestion, maybe some gold applique stars scattered over the top would bring some zing to the quilt.

How about hand quilting the border with perle in red?
Hehe. I like it, too. It's got fun dimensionality. But yeah, if you want more boldness, I'd see what something appliqued on top of it will do. You could print something out in various sizes to lay on it - play with scale, colors, etc, to see if something pops for you.
I thought of both suggestions: quilting in the border in a bold color (could even be a heavier weight yellow/gold thread) and star appliques (see my post here: http://treadlemusic.wordpress.com/2012/12/01/a-saturday-finish/ ). I love doing an overlay of appliques when the quilt just doesn't seem "finished". Blessings and hugs, Doreen
I like the idea of some stars appliqued on top scattered around. If this was a blanket I would say it needs no more and is not boring. But as a piece of art and hanging on the wall as a statement I can see it needs more.
I love checking out your quilts and your lifestyle.
I would applique some yellow or gold birds to represent the result of the collision of the blue & grey (freedom)
I was thinking about you today, wondering if you were going to participate this year. I've been working on my borders. I'll send you a picture when I get the top finished. I like all the suggestions you've been given. It will be interesting to see what you end up doing. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Julia, If the size would permit it,
What if you add a small outer border (or binding) in the Red you used ..It would give it a little 'punch'.IMO..:)
Looking good, as always.
