A Glimpse Through the Lattice

I finally finished this piece of fiber art last evening by adding the label on the back. You can see my process HERE.

A Glimpse Through the Lattice
In days gone by, Southerners escaped the heat by sitting on a shady front porch and listening to the cicadas' rhythmic song. Neighbors could drop by for a short visit and spend the afternoon shelling peas and telling tales over a glass of sweet tea and a slice of pie. This quilt invites viewers to look through the lattice of the past to a simpler, slower time and rest a while in the rocker while reflecting on their own memories.

I helped with the ‘string quilt’ project. We started this quilt last year. You can read about it HERE.

Some of the blocks ended up smaller, so we decided to make two separate quilts.

Thelma made 4 string blocks at home for the beginning of another “String quilt.” The same 4 blocks look different depending which color you turn toward the center.

Another Glimpse Through the Lattice

I’m tempted to make another “Glimpse Through the Lattice” with these two fabrics.

Art Quilt -- A Glimpse Through the Lattice

Life …

IMG_5062

… as a Quilter

I continue to work on this quilt. The ‘rocking chair’ idea is still brewing in my mind. Surely I could add it in some sort of way. So, I took a picture …
IMG_5053

… and printed it out. Then I glued black netting over it and cut it out.
IMG_5070

Washing the glue from the paper and netting.
IMG_5074

The black netting laid over cardboard.
IMG_5090

The black netting over the quilt. It showed up more from an angle. When you looked at it straight on you could hardly see the chair.
IMG_5082

The paper pattern of the chair on the quilt.
IMG_5091

The chair cut from the background fabric of batik.
IMG_5093

The chair from black Kona cotton.
IMG_5094

And a smaller chair from a gray/blue fabric with stitching. Too much stitching on the left side.
IMG_5095

So, I cut another armrest, leg, rocker, and a few rungs to fuse over the overly stitched pieces.
IMG_5096

There, that’s much better.

Fiber Art Quilt – Can This Piece Stand Alone?

Can this piece of fiber art stand alone?
When I started this work HERE, I was thinking of making this the background and then adding a focal point (a rocking chair) in silhouette form to the front like I did my peacock quilt HERE.

IMG_5044 997X1000

The small square patches measure 7/8” with 3/16” between patches. I placed the apple there to help you get a feel for the size of the whole piece that measures 22” X 22.”

IMG_5047

Now that I’m ready to add the rocking chair, I feel the background is way too busy. So, can this piece stand alone?
What are your ideas and thoughts? Is there some sort of name and artist statement that could accompany the piece?
